What about accessories?

After you have purchased your pool, you will need the proper accessories to keep it maintained and a place for relaxation. Intex and Bestway both offer pool accessories, however, I found that Bestway’s accessories seem to focus mostly on pool maintenance, while Intex offers accessories for maintenance and relaxation.

Bestway offers a robotic cleaner, replacement filters, upgraded pumps, and more. Intex also offers these maintenance items. They also offer other accessories such as a pool bench and hydro flow swim trainer.

Many customers of both Intex and Bestway recommend upgrading the included 110-120 V pump, stating it is simply not strong enough to efficiently maintain the pools. Both companies sell upgraded pumps that are compatible with their pools, and customers who made the investment said it was money well spent.

Intex or Bestway Pools – Final Thoughts

Both companies are pretty comparable when it comes to customer satisfaction. Each company has created its own take on different versions of the above ground pool, giving you many options to choose from to fit your needs.

I feel that Intex offers a little more variety as far as pool size and overall accessories go. I also find their website to be more user-friendly.

However, Bestway offers a better variety of cleaning and sanitation accessories, making pool maintenance even easier.

No matter which option you choose, you will be making a great investment that everyone is sure to love.

How long will the Ultra Frame Pool last?

Above ground pools can last for a very long time if maintained properly, and most above ground pool owners report that they have a pool that lasts for more than a decade before they bought a new one.

The most vulnerable part of an above ground pool is the pool liner, that is why it’s very important to set up your above ground pool in a well-leveled and hard-surfaced area of your home to avoid punctures and tears. Also, it is advised that above ground pool owners replace their pool liners every 8-10 years.

However, some pool owners are lucky enough to enjoy their above ground pool for years without having to replace their pool liner.

To make sure that your pool liner lasts longer than it’s lifespan you should put something under it to protect it from the ground itself.

If you need help in finding the best material to put under your Intex Pool, you can check out our article here.

What To Put Under Your Intex Pool

The second most vulnerable part of most above ground pools is the steel frames since these are always exposed to high humidity. The rails are a key part of the structural design of the pool, so owners should be very careful in handling them.

One of the best news for above ground pool enthusiasts is that Intex has developed steel frames that can withstand rust and corrosion.

Let’s take a look at the Intex Ultra Frame Pool Set now.

Ultra Frame XTR – Rectangular Pool vs. Round Pool

Some of the Intex pools are only manufactured in the round shape. However, the Ultra XTR Frame pools come in both round and rectangular.

The most common pool shape for above ground pools is the round or circle shaped. Since the Ultra Frame pool is still a newer model, it’s now more common to see rectangular shaped above ground pools.

Rectangular above ground pools are adored by those families who wanted an in-ground pool but decided to opt with an above ground pool. Since a rectangle is the most common shape of in-ground pools.

Meanwhile, other families opt for a circular or round pool design. Round pools are said to have a much softer and creative look than rectangular ones.

But which of these pool shapes should you get for your Intex Ultra Frame Pool Set?

A rectangular pool set is great for those who want to swim laps in their pool as opposed to circular pools which will require you to swim around the pool or in circles.

For maintenance, the edge goes to round pools since there are no corners in them. These pools are easier to clean than rectangular ones because water circulation is much better.

Cost wise, circular pools tend to be cheaper than rectangular ones as they require fewer materials to construct.

For those looking forward to playing a basketball game or volleyball game in their swimming pool, then your best option will be getting a large rectangular pool to have more space between opposing teams.

To conclude, choosing between a rectangular pool and a circular pool will highly depend on your pool budget and the things you plan to do in your pool.

Both, the Intex Ultra Frame Pool rectangular pool set and the Intex Ultra Frame Pool round pool set, are high-quality products, so you can never go wrong with either one.

The smallest Intex Ultra Frame Set that has a rectangular design has measurements of 18 feet by 9 feet and a depth of 52 inches while the largest for this design and build has measurements of 32 feet by 16 feet and a depth of 52 inches.

How do I maintain my above ground pool?

Gather the right tools for maintaining and cleaning your swimming pool

Start your pool maintenance by preparing all the necessary tools that you will be using like the pool vacuum cleaner, telescoping aluminum shaft, nylon-bristled pool brushes, and your test kit.

Clean your pool filter

You should clean your pool filter from time to time to make sure that the pool is circulating properly and debris is getting filtered by your system. Cleaning your pool filter is also known as backwashing your filter.

Whenever you see small debris circulating your pool that’s a good indication that you might need to clean your pool filter or change it altogether.

Vacuum your pool

Regularly vacuuming your pool helps to maintain cleanliness and avoid having to perform major cleanings in the future.

Clean the interior of your above ground pool

There are times when your above ground pool can have a build-up of copper, too much calcium, or even algae. All of those can cause staining to the walls and floors of your pool interior.

Cleaning your pool’s interior with nylon-bristled brushes and cleaning solutions helps prevent these from occurring in your pool.

Test your water

Your swimming pool water is greatly affected by weather, chemicals, and pool usage. Understanding how these factors change your pool water will help you maintain your pool properly.

Testing your water allows you to be certain that the chemicals you’re using on your pool are working which makes your pool safer to swim in.

Sanitize your pool

To sanitize your pool means you are eliminating bad bacteria and chloramines in your pool. Having a good and powerful filtration system helps you in this regard significantly.

Good thing that the Intex Ultra Frame Pool Set comes with a great Krystal Clear Filtration and Sanitation system.

Keep your water clear

Prevention is key to avoiding your water from becoming unclear. Make sure you always take out any debris you see in your pool.

Intex 28003E Deluxe Maintenance Kit for Above Ground Pools, 1, Blue
  • Requires an Intex filter pump with a minimum flow rate of 800 gph
  • Vacuum sucks debris off the pool floor and through the filter
  • Attaches to the outlet connector in the pool with a 24 feet 7 Inch hose
  • Durable and deep mesh skimmer net

How do I maintain my pool during winter season?

If you live in a place where winter season is not that extreme, instead of packing up your Intex pool altogether, then you can decide to winterize your pool.

“Winterizing” your pool means you are preparing your pool for the winter.

You’ll be doing this so that you don’t have to disassemble your pool and reassemble it again after the winter season.

The first step in winterizing your pool is to remove every piece of equipment on your Intex pool. You should remove the hoses, filters, pumps, and of course, the ladder from your pool.

Next is to trash old filter cartridge, so that you can replace it with a new one once the winter season ends.

The third step is for you to clean the equipment you removed before storing them in a secured and dry location. You may have to hose off some of the equipment to thoroughly clean them. You should also submerge your hoses in soapy water to remove any chemical on them.

The next step to winterizing your Intex Ultra Frame pool set is to balance your pool water the way you’ve been balancing it before. Make sure that you test the water and that it’s balanced.

The most important step in preparing your pool for the winter is by adding winter chemical kit. These are chemicals you put in your pool when you won’t be using it for more than a month. You could get these at your local store or from Amazon.

Lastly, once you’re finished adding the chemicals, you should cover your pool to avoid any debris from falling into it. This also helps prevent the weather from affecting your pool’s chemistry and water balance.

What are Intex Pools?

Intex is the industry leader in affordable above ground pools that can be installed and set up by a homeowner, without the need for specialized equipment or construction crews. They are a small fraction of the price of installing a permanent pool.

Intex makes several varieties of pools that have different construction materials and price points that you can choose from. They even make our favorite kiddie pool!

The types of Intex Pools are:

  • Easy Set
  • Metal Frame
  • Prism Frame
  • Ultra XTR Frame

Intex Pool Reviews – The Various Types

Intex Easy Set Pools

This pool is pretty straight forward. It has a ring at the top that inflates quickly and is ready to fill with water in about 10-15 minutes. As the water fills the pool it will take shape to provide a great swimming area for your backyard. The set includes a 110-120 V Krystal Clear cartridge filter pump, and the larger sized pools (15 ft and 18 ft diameter) include a pool ladder, ground cloth, and pool cover. It is also equipped with a ground fault interrupter in the event that the electrical current becomes exposed to water. This safety feature prevents the risk of electric shock. The Easy Set comes in sizes ranging from 6ft in diameter up to 18 ft in diameter. Overall, the Intex Easy Set pools offer great value for money to anyone who is looking to add an above ground pool in their backyard.

Easy set pools are best for: First-time pool owners and families with little space for a larger pool.

Intex Metal Frame Pools

Intex’s Metal Frame is a thick liner supported by strong, durable steel frames. The steel frames are powder coated to prevent rust for extra protection. A reinforcement band surrounds the entire pool to keep the steel frame stable and in place. Pool assembly takes approximately 45 minutes to be ready to fill with water. All metal frame pool sets include a 110-120 Krystal Clear cartridge filter pump to help you with the pool maintenance and ensure that you have clean pool water. This pool also has a ground fault interrupter to prevent the risk of electric shock. If the current becomes exposed to water, the electricity is automatically shut off. The larger pool sizes (15 ft and 18 ft) also include a pool ladder, ground cover, and debris cover. This pool comes in 10 ft up to 18 ft diameter sizes.

Intex Prism Frame Pools

One thing that sets the Prism Frame apart from Intex’s other pools is that it is the only option that comes in 3 different shapes with varying sizes: round, oval, and rectangle. A similar construction to the Metal Frame, the Prism Frame is constructed of a stylish, durable 3 ply liner set on strong powder-coated steel tubing. For added stability, a reinforcement band also holds this pool and its frame securely in place. The frame is built on simplified t-joints with no pins required, and assembly of this pool actually doesn’t require any tools. It is fitted for a dual suction outlet for improved water circulation as an added feature. Pool assembly takes approximately 45 minutes to be ready for water. Are Intex Swimming Pools any good?

Intex pools are designed to be very affordable, and for the price you pay, the materials are surprisingly good quality. Of course, they are not the same quality as a permanent pool would be, but they also cost a fraction of the price. Overall, for the price paid, Intex pools provide hours of fun and entertainment for your family.

How long do Intex Pools last?

How long your pool lasts will depend on a few factors. First, is the specific pool you purchase. It should be no surprise that the Ultra XTR Frame pools will outlast the inflatable Easy Set pools.

Many owners report even the inflatable pools can last 4-5 seasons with proper care and maintenance.

How much do Intex Pools cost?

The various types of Intex pools have different price points. The Easy Set pool (which is the most affordable) starts at under $50 for the smallest sizes and up to $300 for the larger sizes. Even the affordable Easy Set pools come with a pump and filter, everything you need to get started.

On the upper end of the Intex range, the Ultra XTR Frame pools start at around $500 for the smallest size and go up to about $1500 for the largest pool system.

Where can you install an Intex Pool?

One of the best features of all the Intex Pools is that there is no special digging or construction needed to have a pool. Intex pools simply need to be installed on a flat, level, and solid surface with no sharp objects below it to protect your pool liner from any damage.

Intex Pools can be installed on:

  • Level areas of your lawn
  • Concrete patios
  • Driveways

Avoid installing Intex Pools:

  • On any incline or un-level surface
  • Under any trees
  • Too far from electrical power and a hose

What is the Best Intex Pool?

All the Intex Pool styles have their unique features and benefits. However, if you are simply looking for which Intex Pool is made from the best materials, then that is hands down the Ultra XTR Frame Pools. It also holds the most gallons of water and gives you more swimming space than any other Intex pool set.

Do Intex Pools need chemicals?

Yes. In order to keep your pool water clean and safe, you will need to use the proper chemicals in your water. Intex Pools are no different than any other pool in this regard. If you’re not that familiar with the whole pool cleaning process, you can follow the instructions on the user manual that comes with your Intex pool set.

Can you heat an Intex Pool?

Yes. If you live in a climate where you need to heat the pool for maximum use, this is possible. Keep in mind though, that the pool heater will likely cost almost as much as the pool itself!

A more affordable option is simply adding a solar cover to your Intex Pool and you’d be surprised on how many homeowners opted for this option to easily save money. These covers lay on top of the water when the pool is not in use and helps to transfer the Sun’s heat into the water.

Where is the best place to buy Intex Pools?

Some of the smaller Intex above ground pools can be purchased at your local retail stores like Wal-Mart. However, we recommend purchasing online since the boxes that these pools are delivered in can be large and cumbersome. It is much easier to have the delivery person handle your new pool rather than try to maneuver it into your car or truck at the store.

Amazon.com carries many Intex Pools at a great price. We have not found a better place to buy than there.

What are some great Intex Pool accessories?

There are lots of accessories for your Intex pool. You may also decide to upgrade your intex pool pump if you are not satisfied with the pump that comes with the pool.

Final thoughts

Once you understand your needs and the differences between each pool, you will feel confident making an informed decision on your backyard pool. Intex is known for making quality products and they offer plenty of support on their website. They provide information on winterizing all of their pools, maintenance, and delivery in their FAQ.

No matter what choices you make for your backyard pool, you are sure to enjoy a summer of fun!

Avoid this common mistake – SAND

One of the most common mistakes that new Intex pool owners make is that they put sand under their pool. We understand why! It is easier to level, which is very important for your pool. However, sand easily washes away from under the pool during hard rain. For this reason, Intex VOIDS THE WARRANTY if you in fact had sand under the pool! Please read the warranty carefully to avoid this problem.

Here are 4 Ideas of What to Put Under Intex Above Ground Pools

There are a handful of things you can put under your Intex pool to make sure that it lasts longer, but we only recommend the following materials to put under your Intex pool. Keep in mind that Intex pools vary in size. See our article on Intex Pool Sizes to learn about all the different pools available.

The Intex Ground Cloth

The Intex Ground Cloth is included with most Intex Pool sets. It provides added protection for the pool bottom from rocks, twigs, or other items that could potentially puncture the liner. However, even though Intex Pools, in general, receive good reviews from the owners, the Ground Cloth is generally described as a sub-standard item and is too thin to provide much real protection. This is why many Intex Pool owners decide to opt for another option.

  • Provide added protection for pool bottom
  • Measures 15.5-foot square; fits 8-foot,10-foot, 12-foot,and 15-foot pools; use with Easy Set or frame pools

Third-Party Pool Pads

There are many companies that manufacture alternatives to the Intex Ground Cloth that provide more thickness and therefore more protection for your liner. Make sure you choose the right size for your pool. If your pool is 15′ diameter, then choose the 15′ diameter pad. There is no benefit to having a larger pad than the pool, and in fact, the excess can be cumbersome to manage and you will just have to cut it off anyway.

Interlocking Foam Tiles

This is a good way to add a decent amount of padding under your pool bottom. Without lots of padding, you can feel every texture of the ground under your feet in the pool. This bothers some people and foam padding feels great under the pool. It also makes cleaning the bottom of your pool using an Intex pool vacuum much easier since you have a more uniform surface without dips and divots for the dirt to get trapped.

You simply need to calculate how many squares you need for your pool. Here are some quick calculations using 2’x2′ foam tiles.

  • 10′ diameter pool = 35 Tiles (140sq.ft)
  • 15′ diameter pool = 60 Tiles (240sq.ft)
  • 18′ diameter pool = 80 Tiles (320sq.ft)
  • 20′ diameter pool = 115 Tiles (460sq.ft)
  • 24′ diameter pool = 145 Tiles (580sq.ft)

Don’t let your Intex pool look like this!

Old Carpet

This is another good material that will help you decide. We really like this solution since it can be FREE if you can find someone disposing of their old carpet. Just put the carpet down under the pool, with the plush side up. The carpet provides good protection from the stones and pebbles that could cause a tear in the liner, but it does not provide as much cushion and uniform surface for cleaning as the foam tiles do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use sand under my Intex Pool?

The folks at Intex are fairly clear that you should NOT put sand under your pool. The sand can easily wash away, causing voids under your pool and risking your pool leaning and even collapsing.

Where’s the best location to put my Intex Pool?

The most important point for choosing a location for your pool is that it must be a flat, level, and stable surface. That is the most important thing when choosing a location.

Can I put my Intex Pool on the driveway or concrete patio?

YES. As long as your driveway or patio is level, this is a great place for an Intex Pool. If you do choose to put your Intex Pool on your driveway or patio, then we highly recommend the foam tile solution mentioned above as a way to provide cushioning for the bottom of the pool.

What should I put under other types of above ground pools?

These tips are the same for any type of above ground pool. Bestway and Summer Waves are great alternatives to Intex Pools and this advice is the same for those brands.

What should I put under the legs of my Intex pool?

Stability of the legs is vital to a sturdy Intex pool. You should NOT put the legs directly on the ground, they will sink in once the weight of the water is pushing down. You SHOULD put a concrete paver under each leg. The paver should be at least 1ft x 1ft in size.

Conclusion

Those pretty much sums up everything we could discuss on this topic, and hopefully, we were able to answer your question earlier, “what to put under Intex pools?”.
