Ready for the Chlorine Shortage of 2021?

How To Keep Ducks Out Of A Pool

Having a swimming pool in your backyard is every family’s dream. Being able to swim and retreat to your pool area on a hot day is a very relaxing experience.

However, a lot of money, time, and effort is required to have a pool and maintain it properly. It would be a problem if something or someone would mess things up in your ideal outdoor space.

One of the massive disturbances and serious dilemma to pool owners are ducks. Ducks are friendly to humans, but they can turn your pristine pool and yard into a messy and disgusting place.

It’s safe to assume that your backyard along with your swimming pool is the ideal place for ducks to build their nest. It serves as a protected haven, water resource, and comes with vegetation that ducks need to raise their brood and keep them safe from predators.

Why Should You Keep Ducks Out Your Pool?

Some may be wondering what the problem is with ducks in the swimming pool. Ducks are cute and fun to watch when they waddle from time to time in a pond. But it is no longer fun and cute when you have to deal with duck noise and droppings in and around your “supposed to be” clean and clear pool water. There are several reasons why you should keep your ducks from building a nest in your pool area.

The first reason would be ducks are persistent creatures. Once they’ve established a sense of security in your pool area, it would be difficult for you to eliminate them without taking severe actions.

Second, as ducks can be categorized as wildlife, it increases the chance for diseases like salmonella and E. coli to spread on your property. The good thing here is when they come in contact with your pool maintained with proper chlorine level, some bacteria will die instantly.

Finally, ducks can contaminate your pool water by bringing in chemicals such as phosphates and nitrates.

So, instead of just shooing them away, you must find a way to keep them out of your pool permanently.

Now, there are various ways you can do to enjoy a peaceful and clean pool area whenever you want, free of duck poop and duck noise. We’ve shared some of the most successful ones here.

Successful Methods On How To Keep Ducks Out of A Pool

1. Put some animal toy around your pool area

On Sale Now!
Intex Giant Gator Ride-On, 80" X 45", for Ages 3+
  • Bring a little colorful, friendly gator fun to your next pool or lake adventure with this delightful inflatable
  • Room for multiple riders; constructed of durable, 12-gauge vinyl with two air chambers
  • Includes repair patch kit
  • Measures 45 by 80 inches (W x D)

Wild ducks do not like to be near their natural predators. If the water they wanted to swim has predators in them, they will look for another place to float and swim on.

If you cannot cover your pool entirely, try having inflatable animals in your pool to keep these types of birds away. There are plenty of inflatable animal toys to choose from, such as alligators, snakes, or dolphins.

For this method to succeed, the ducks should not figure out that the floating animals are not moving. Otherwise, they can be aggravating to penetrate the pool and defy the inflatable animal toy’s presence.

2. Use an Automatic Pool Cleaner in your swimming pool

  • Drop and go. Easy to use, single button plug and play in-ground robotic pool cleaner ideal for pools up to 50 feet; backed by a 3 year quality assurance.

  • Powerful, dual scrubbing brushes forcefully attack tough dirt and debris leaving your swimming pool floor, walls and waterline exceptionally clean in 3 hours.
  • Multiple filter options for an optimal clean pool. The Premier comes standard with three filter options: bottom-load fine cartridge filters, ultra-fine cartridge filters, and an oversized fine filter...

Ducks are pretty easy to scare. Though the automatic pool cleaner’s appearance will not scare them away, the loud and noisy vacuum sound would do the trick.

A robotic pool cleaner can be pretty expensive, but the double benefit of keeping the pool clean and keeping the ducks away is a great investment that you can pursue.

Be sure to check our guide here regarding the best robotic pool cleaners available today.

3. Get a dog in your pool area

Having a dog in your household is another successful way to keep the ducks away from your pool. It can also help keep other wild animals away. As mentioned earlier, having a “predator” within the vicinity will definitely scare the ducks away. A fake one might not work, but a real one like a barking dog is a guarantee to keep them away for good.

The trick is to have a dog that is known to bark and chase the ducks. Some of the best breeds that come to mind are beagles and Labrador retrievers. Keep in mind that your dog should be able to do this without actually hurting the ducks in the process.

4. Use Duck Off in your pool

As ducks are seen to be a common annoyance for pool owners worldwide, there is no doubt that there is a product readily available in the market to specifically address the “duck problem.”

Duck Off is the name of this product that breaks the water’s surface tension and makes it uncomfortable for ducks to swim in the pool.

For this product to work its purpose, you should consistently use it so the ducks would figure out later on that the pool is no longer suitable for them to use. Once they realized that, you won’t see any duck droppings in your pool area and you can enjoy your outdoor space in peace.

5. Keep your pool clean at all times

Having a properly maintained pool can be a natural deterrent for ducks. This means that your pool should be free from any floating debris or things such as sticks or leaves and should have an adequate chlorine level to eliminate bacteria and disease.

Ducks instinctively prefer pond water. Pond water has a smelly odor, and you can spot floating things. Having clean water with proper chlorine levels can be enough to keep the ducks away since it doesn’t smell or look like pond water.

6. Put a plastic owl in your pool area

  • Stylish Decoration: Can be placed in the garden, patio, or porch. Also could be placed in indoor to decorate your living room, hall, restaurant, hotel. With our scarecrow owl, you don't have to worry...

Owls are one of the known duck predators. Good thing that owls are often stationary. It might not be easy for ducks to figure out that the owl they see lurking around the pool area is fake.

Having plastic owls lurking around your pool area can be enough to scare them away. For this method’s success, you should consider putting up decoys that move their heads and make a hooting sound. Having several of these around your pool area wouldn’t be a bad choice either.

7. Remove any duck-enticing stuff in your backyard

There is no doubt that having flowers or bird feeders in your pool area is a means of attraction for ducks and birds. So you better get rid of these things because you do not want them to find something that can cause them to stay and mess up your pool.

8. Cover your pool with bird nets

  • 【Muitiple Use】This orchard net is used as an outdoor cover ideal for blueberry, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, fig, cherry and other fruit trees , koi pond, chicken coops, etc. Don’t let...

This method can be done by having a netted pool cover. The netting can act as a roof for the pool.

If properly installed, it should keep ducks away from your swimming pool permanently. It also helps in keeping leaves from falling into your pool.

9. Use a solar pool cover

  • ATTRACTIVE BLUE DESIGN - Sun2Solar solar blankets are made from a film of thousands of tiny bubbles, which work together to collect and retain heat both at night and on those chilly days. The blue...

  • JUMP INTO WARMTH - Show friends and family your bravery by jumping in without the standard toe dip. Enter the swimming pool confidently knowing the Sun2Solar solar cover has kept the water warm just...
  • HEAT RETENTION - After everyone has called it a day with wrinkled fingers from too much fun in the sun, make sure to place this solar cover back atop the water. Don’t lose all of that warmth...

Another great solution to keep ducks out of a pool is to make use of a good solar pool cover. This will keep ducks from landing on your pool water and if they don’t have access to your swimming pool, there’s no reason for them to stay.

Pool covers also help in keeping debris out of your pool, so it’s a great tool to keep your pool clean.

7 Best Alternatives To Chlorine For Pools

Chlorine has been the most widely used pool sanitizer ever since because it does a great job killing bacteria, germs, and viruses in your pool water, helps in controlling the organic debris from body oils and sweat, and stops algae from taking over your pool. And you can’t take away the fact of how inexpensive it is to use on your pool.

As popular as chlorine is to pool owners, there are still some people who might be allergic to it. If you’re not allergic, the strong chemical smell from chlorine may deter you from using it. You also have to consider that being exposed to chlorine for long periods may cause eye or skin irritation.

The good news is it’s not the only sanitizer that you can use to achieve clean and clear swimming pool water, there are numerous alternatives to chlorine for pools that are way safer and gentler to your skin and eyes.

If you’re one of those people who are looking for the best substitute for chlorine, here are our recommendations.

Alternatives to Chlorine For Pools You Could Consider

Bromine

Bromine is a great alternative to chlorine. It can be used by those allergic to chlorine, however, this may not apply to all since bromine is still in the same halogen chemical family as chlorine.

Bromine is a capable pool sanitizer but sunlight can easily burn away parts of bromine faster compared to chlorine. Chlorine has better protection against this that’s why it’s good for outdoor pools.

If you will be using bromine on an outdoor swimming pool, you will be forced to use more of it to counteract the sun’s effect.

This pool chemical offers well-balanced pool water and gives you more stability with regards to your water chemistry levels unlike when you are using chlorine. Using bromine instead of chlorine reduces skin irritation and makes your water feel softer on your skin.

It also does well in high water temperatures which is the main reason why it’s the water sanitizer of choice for spas and hot tubs.

Pros of Using Bromine as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Great chlorine alternative for indoor pools
  • Can sanitize your pool almost as good as chlorine
  • Much gentler on the skin and eyes

Cons of Using Bromine as a Chlorine Alternative

  • More expensive than chlorine
  • Dissolves easily by the sun’s rays, may not be the best sanitizing solution for those with outdoor pools

Salt Water

Circupool RJ30 Plus Complete Salt Water Chlorination System for Swimming Pools. 2021 Model with 1.5 lb. Output, USA Made Titanium Cell & 7 Year Warranty; no DIY Penalty.
  • CircuPool RJ30 PLUS Complete Salt Water Chlorination System for Swimming Pools
  • Easy Install. Works with any brand pump and filter. USA Titanium cell. 220 or 110 volt
  • Features OLED digital display, heavy-duty construction, and premium clear salt cell.
  • Industry leading seven year limited warranty; No DYI (Do It Yourself) warranty penalty

A more natural way to sanitize your pool that eliminates chlorine usage all together is by going with a saltwater pool system. Instead of adding chlorine directly to your pool water, you will rely on using salt to keep your pool clean. Once the salt becomes charged, it will break down into chlorine. But unlike the typical chlorine, these won’t hurt your eyes or irritate your skin.

This is a good pool sanitizing solution and it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to make the necessary changes. Most pool owners are turning their chlorinated pool system into saltwater pools because of the many benefits of doing so and one of the most obvious benefits is it eliminates the need to use chlorine in your pool.

Pros of Using Salt Water System as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Eliminates the need to use chlorine completely
  • Offers better and safer pool experience

Cons of Using Salt Water System as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Depending on the size of your pool, installing a saltwater pool system can be expensive

Mineral Water

On Sale Now!
Nature2 Express Mineral Pool Sanitizer
  • Fits most in-ground and above-ground pools up to 25,000 gallons with 1 ½"" or 2"" rigid PVC pipe plumbing.
  • Easy, do-it-yourself installation. Everything in one box.
  • Cartridge lasts up to six months.
  • Reduces chlorine use up to 50%.

A mineral pool system effectively reduces the need to use chlorine by as much as 50% and this makes it one of the most popular pool chlorine alternatives today. This cartridge-based system is composed of minerals that eliminate bacteria, algae, and other microorganisms as your pool water flows through its chamber.

They are easy to set up and low on maintenance as you just need to refill the mineral cartridges. The downsides of using mineral pool water systems are that chlorine must still be used and the replacement cartridges add additional costs to your pool maintenance. They need to be replaced often, especially for those with larger pools.

Pros of Using Mineral Water System as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Reduces the need to use chlorine
  • Does a great job removing bacteria and viruses from your pool

Cons of Using Mineral Water System as a Chlorine Alternative

  • High initial setup costs
  • Can become too expensive to maintain for those with large swimming pools

Ozone Generators

SP-5G Swimming Pool Ozone Generator
  • Reduce chemical usage by up to 95%
  • 5 G/hour Adjustable Ozone Concentration
  • Variable Ozone Output (10 - 100%).
  • PTFE tube for O3 outlet.

Considered as one of the best chlorine alternatives today, ozone generators are starting to become more popular among swimming pool owners. The best thing about ozone generators is. unlike other chlorine alternatives listed here, they can break down all types of organic contaminants in your pool

It also helps soften your pool water because it is a pH-neutral solution, so it can help solve your calcium scaling problem.

It works by inserting ozone gas, an active form of oxygen, into your pool water and make it react against impurities. However, it’s advised that you use another sanitizing solution to get the most out of your ozone generator and keep your pool water clean.

If you need help finding the right size of ozone generator for your pool, check out this guide here.

Pros of Using Ozone Generators as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Allows you to use fewer pool chemicals
  • Effectively rid your pool water of bacteria and viruses

Cons of Using Ozone Generators as a Chlorine Alternative

  • High upfront costs
  • Will still need to use another sanitizing solution for best results

Ionization

CopperFlo Solar Pool Ionizer - High Capacity | 85% Less Chlorine | Lifetime Replacement Warranty | Kill Algae | Longer Lasting Copper Anode | 25% More Ions | Keeps Pool Cleaner | Up to 45,000 Gal
  • HIGHEST QUALITY: New model Sept 2019. Patented technology used in the creation of our large capacity copper anode, which creates 25% more ions in your pool and lasts longer than prior models. Beware...
  • Our Solar Pool Cleaner will prevent algae and reduce the amount of chlorine up to 85%. Our ionizers work perfectly fine with small amounts of Chlorine and, consistently, the pH becomes very stable....
  • The power of the sun works with an underwater ion-disbursing anode to release copper ions that are very effective at killing algae and keeping your pool clean and pure. Does not require batteries
  • Covers up to 45,000 gallon pools. Will not harm the finish of your pool or vinyl liner. Works on chlorine or salt pools. Solution to the chlorine shortage

Another one of the most common pool chlorine alternatives is making use of ionizers. The ionization process introduces metallic ions into your pool water with the help of a low voltage current. These positively-charged ions are attracted to the negatively-charged bacteria, viruses, oils, algae, and other harmful substances in your pool. Once attached to them, they destroy their cell membranes. This makes it an effective sanitizer without the need to utilize any chlorine.

As the water is recirculated in your pool system, you get to produce more positively-charged ions that will help keep your pool clean and safe to use.

The most popular type of ionization system is copper ionization. Copper ions are not affected by sunlight and this makes it a great chlorine alternative for those with outdoor pools.

Pros of Using Ionizer as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Great chlorine alternative for outdoor pools
  • Effectively sanitizes your pool water
  • The system is fairly easy to install and maintain

Cons of Using Ionizer as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Initial setup can be expensive

UV Light

Not really an alternative to chlorine, but can help you lessen the chlorine that you will need to put in your swimming pool. The UV light takes care of most germs, viruses, and bacteria in your pool and the chlorine takes care of the organic waste. With a UV light system in place, you won’t have to use much chlorine to keep your pool water safe and clean.

The UV light alters the DNA of the harmful bacterias so they won’t be able to reproduce and destroy them. You will need to get the proper-sized UV light which you can determine by calculating the flow rate of your pool.

Pros of Using UV Light as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Ensures your swimming pool is clear of harmful organisms
  • Does not require many pool chemicals to be used

Cons of Using UV Light as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Water needs to make contact with UV light, if it doesn’t then it can back to your pool as unsanitized water
  • UV light becomes less effective over time and you will have to replace it regularly

Polyhexamethylenebiguanide or PHMB or Biguanide

Baquacil Sanitizer
  • Swimming Pool Sanitizer and Algistat
  • Chlorine-Free

Another great alternative to chlorine for pools is the Polyhexamethylenebiguanide, or more commonly known as PHMB or Biguanide. Biguanide works by penetrating the bacteria cell walls which causes them to burst. When used in pools, Biguanide does not cause skin or eye irritation unlike chlorine, and is easy on swimming pools that are using vinyl pool liners.

The main drawback in using PHMB or Biguanide is they don’t oxidize the organic matter in your swimming pool and you will have to use hydrogen peroxide as well.

Pros of Using Biguanide as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Gentler on the skin and eyes
  • Doesn’t corrode walls and floor of the pool

Cons of Using Biguanide as a Chlorine Alternative

  • Can be expensive to use for those with large swimming pools
  • Doesn’t oxidize, you’re forced to use another set of chemicals for those
  • You’re required to clean your pool filters and apply a separate algaecide every four to six weeks

As you may already noticed, most of the alternatives to chlorine for pools are much more expensive. If you’re going to ask us which of these chlorine substitutes is our best choice we have to go with getting a saltwater pool system installed. This setup eliminates the need to use chlorine altogether and allows you to get the best pool experience possible by providing you with clean and soft water.

Muriatic Acid For Pools – Everything You Need To Know

Pool ownership is much more complicated than you might think it is. It’s not enough for you to just add chlorine and let your pool pump and filtration system do the rest. The truth is maintaining your pool is a complex process, and sometimes you need to know the importance of muriatic acid for pools in your maintenance routine.

Muriatic acid helps in balancing the water chemistry in your pool. The acidity and alkalinity of the water in your swimming pool can easily change due to weather, high water temperature, and by addition of chlorine or other pool chemicals.

You might be surprised to know the many uses and benefits of using muriatic acid on pools.

What Is Muriatic Acid?

Muriatic acid is a less-pure version of hydrochloric acid. Both are highly corrosive and can easily dissolve plastics, clothing, and metals. Muriatic acid contains hydrochloric acid concentration levels between 28 to 35 percent and its pH is less than 1.0, making it one of the most acidic substances available today.

You can easily buy muriatic acid at your local home improvement or pool supply store and is widely used in various tasks such as removing rust and stain on concrete surfaces and reducing the pH in your swimming pool.

Muriatic Acid For Pools: Benefits and Uses

Acid Blue Muriatic Acid - Swimming Pool pH Reducer Balancer | Buffered, Low-Fume - 1 Gallon
  • ✅ Vapor Reduction Technology reduces up to 90% of harmful vapors normally associated with 'old school' muriatic acid
  • ✅ Controls the pH level of water in pools - super effective pool water balancer
  • ✅ Brightens concrete & masonry surfaces
  • ✅ Removes stains from driveways or garage floors

Muriatic acid is widely used in swimming pools since it’s very affordable and has many uses.

For one, it can be used to clean your pool cartridge filter and remove the residue that builds up in there.

You can also use muriatic acid to clean the interior of your swimming pool. You can scrub your pool walls with muriatic acid to remove any stains and algae on them.

Now, muriatic acid is popular among pool owners because it does a terrific job lowering the pH and alkalinity of your pool water. The pH level on your swimming pool should be between 7.2 to 7.8. If it’s higher than 7.8, then you may start noticing calcium buildup, scaling, or cloudy water soon. It may also result in algae blooms if your pH and alkalinity levels stay too high and can damage your pool’s structure and equipment if you won’t do something to lower them.

You may use various pool chemicals to lower the pH and alkalinity of your pool water, but muriatic acid is the cheapest and effective chemical pH reducer out there.

Step-by-Step Guide On How To Add Muriatic Acid To Swimming Pools

Muriatic acid can be added to your pool directly to lower the alkalinity and pH levels. Here’s our guide on how to add muriatic acid to pools properly and safely.

1. Test your water chemistry

The first thing you should do before adding muriatic acid to your pool is to test your water chemistry levels. While test strips can identify the pH levels of your pool water, we highly suggest using a more accurate testing solution like the pHin Smart Water Care Monitor for Pools.

pHin Smart Water Care Monitor for Pools, Hot Tubs and Spas - 24/7 Continuous Water Testing + Know When to Add Chemicals with Automatic App Notifications (New & Improved)
  • AUTOMATIC NOTIFICATIONS: The pHin app automatically alerts you when you need to adjust your chemicals and lets you know exactly how much of which chemicals to use. Works with both Android and iOS.
  • TAKES GUESSWORK OUT OF ADDING CHEMICALS: Scan any supported chemical’s barcode and the pHin app will calculate how much to add to your water. Supports most major chemical brands.
  • POOL AND HOT TUB CARE SIMPLIFIED: Instead of showing you continuously changing raw readings, pHin’s built-in intelligence samples your water chemistry more than 1000 times per week and creates...
  • SUPPORTS ALL WATER TYPES: Works with chlorine, bromine and salt water based pools, hot tubs and swim spas.

The ideal readings for the pH level of your pool water should be between 7.2-7.8, which means anything higher than that makes your water too basic.

2. Wear your safety gear

Before you add muriatic acid to your swimming pool, you must wear protective gear to avoid getting your skin burned. Muriatic acid is a very strong acid, and it can easily deteriorate your clothing if you’re not careful and cause extreme burns.

We advise wearing something that can fully cover your arms and legs, and use protective goggles to protect your eyes as well. You should use a pair of gloves that is resistant to acid like these Pacific PPE Chemical Resistant Gloves.

PACIFIC PPE 2 Pairs Latex Chemical Resistant Gloves, Heavy Duty Industrial Rubber Gloves, 28 mil, 12.6", X-Large
  • PREMIUM MATERIAL-LONAN Chemical Protective Gloves are made of natural latex, they have excellent elasticity and durability.
  • DURABLE HAND PROTECTIONS - LANON Latex Chemical Resistant Gloves provide high resistance to chemicals, strong acid, alkali and mechanical oil and other liquid risks. Thickness 28mil, better hand...
  • NON-SLIP&ABRASION RESISTANCE-These industrial gloves have unique palm particle texture design to prevent slippery effectively. And excellent grip and dexterity offer comfort and flexible hand...
  • USER-FRIENDLY-Safety Heavy Work Gloves are smooth and elastic, easy to put on and off, there is no uncomfortable feeling even if worn for a long time.

3. Start diluting the muriatic acid

You cannot add the muriatic acid to your pool without diluting it first, it will certainly cause more problems and may even destroy your pool and its equipment. Diluting enables you to get the right chemistry before you add it to your pool water.

To dilute the muriatic acid, you must fill up a 4 to 5 gallon of bucket with clean water, not pool water. Once that’s done, you must add the muriatic carefully and follow the ratio of 1 part acid and 10 parts water.

Never put the muriatic acid first before you add water as this will cause a chemical reaction to occur between the acid and your plastic bucket. Also, avoid adding water to muriatic acid as this may cause it to splash and get in contact with your skin and clothing.

4. Add it to your pool

Once you’re done diluting the muriatic acid, you can start pouring the bucket’s content into the deep end of your pool. Make sure that you have turned on your pool pump before you do this step. The water should be running and circulating well before you add the acid to your swimming pool.

If you have extremely high total alkalinity and pH levels, you can pour it on different parts of your pool.

5. Test your water chemistry again

After adding the acid and waiting for a few hours, you can start testing the water chemistry levels and check your pH level if it decreased.

If it’s still too high, then you should add more muriatic acid to the pool until you reach the ideal pH and alkalinity levels. You can retest the water every 4 hours until you reach the right pH reading which is anywhere between 7.2 and 7.8.

Alternatives For Muriatic Acid On Pools

If you’re too worried about your safety when adding muriatic acid to your pool, then you might consider the following options.

  • Sodium bisulfate
  • Sodium dichlor
  • Pool algaecide

All of those may be the more expensive option compared to muriatic acid but they can also help you balance your pool’s pH and alkalinity levels. Some of them like sodium bisulfate may take more than a day before it can properly balance your water chemistry.

It’s also worth noting that muriatic acid adds no other chemical species to your swimming pool other than ones that are already present and it has no potential long term side-effects.

Final Thoughts

Muriatic acid is considered the best option to lower the pH and alkalinity levels in your swimming pool. When you’re able to properly balance your pool chemistry, you can avoid the need to adjust your alkalinity levels.

You may also make use of muriatic acid to remove algae, dissolve calcium deposits, remove stains, and clean pool walls and floor. It’s great to have this acid on stock, and if you need help in storing pool chemicals, you should check out our post, How To Store Pool Chemicals.

The sand filter pumps utilize sand as a filter material rather than the replaceable cartridges. This system is almost universally used in in-ground and commercial pools.

Lately, manufacturing and technology changes has lowered the cost of sand filters to where they are now reasonable choices for above-ground pool owners.

You can see the basics of how the sand filter works in the diagram.

pumps for intex pools

The sand filter pump is equipped with Hydro Aeration Technology, that’s unique to Intex pool pumps. Its benefits include improved circulation and filtration, better water clarity, and increased negative ions at the surface of your pool water.

You can choose between six different functions when you operate this pool pump.

  • Filter
  • Backwash
  • Rinse
  • Re-circulate
  • Drain
  • Close
pumps for intex pools

This sand filter pool pump needs 120 lbs. of sand to work efficiently and is recommended for above ground pools up to 19,600 gallons in size. The best thing about selecting this pool pump is you only have to replace the sand in your filter system every five years.

The filter pump system is also very easy to set up and use since it comes with a built-in automatic timer and 6-function control (filter, backwash, re-circulate, drain, rinse, and close system).

This product comes with a 2 years limited manufacturer’s warranty.

Pool Pump Basics – First Things First

The purpose of running the pool pump is to get the water circulating through the pool, which means getting all of the water through the filter.  Many times you will hear pump and it means pump and filter, however, the pump and the filter are two distinctly different things.  Pumps circulate the water and push the water through the FILTER, the filter is what cleans the water

What is Flow Rate?

Pump Flow Rate is how many gallons of water your pump moves per hour or minute.  The measure is GPH which is short for GALLONS PER HOUR; this is how many gallons of water is filtered through your pump per hour.  The GPH is stated on the pool pump & manual.  Often it may be GPM or GALLONS PER MINUTE.

If you are trying to calculate and need to convert GPM to GPH or GPH to GPM, divide the GPH by 60 or multiply the GPM by 60 (because there are 60 minutes in an hour).

GPM x 60 = GPH GALLONS PER HOUR

GPH/60 = GPM GALLONS PER MINUTE

What is Turnover Rate?

Turnover rate is the basis for a clean pool.  If your turnover rate is too low, water is not being sanitized; and while turnover rate and flow rate sound the same, they are very different.  Pumps have FLOW RATES, TURNOVER RATES apply to the pool water.

Turnover Rate is the time it takes for all of the water in the pool to circulate through the pump/filter.  The turnover rate is measured in hours; how many hours it takes.  If you have a large pump and all of the water goes through the pump/filter twice a day, the turnover rate would be 12.  If you have a smaller pump and the water goes through the pump/filter once a day, the turnover rate would be 24.

Pool Size Matters!

Yes, size does matter! In fact it is one of the biggest factors when choosing the right Iintex pool pump.

Usually, the pump that came with your pool has the minimum flow rate needed for your pool. Of course the manufacturers do this to keep the cost of the pool kit affordable. Therefore when upgrading your Intex pool pump – always buy a pump with a higher flow rate than the pump that it came with.

Find how many gallons your swimming pool contains – check our article on pool sizes here where we have a gallons chart – and buy a pool pump that can cycle all your pool’s water volume at least once per day, better if it can do it twice or three times per day.

How To Choose The Best Pump For Intex Pools

When it comes to selecting the right pool pump for your Intex pool, we focus on these three factors:

Speed of the pool pump

The speed of your chosen pool pump determines how long it will take to cycle the water in your pool.

Pool pumps vary in speed, there are single speed, dual speed, and variable speed pumps. Since we’re looking for the best pool pump for Intex pools, then we highly suggest going with a variable speed pool pump. This type of pool pump offers more efficiency but consumes less energy than single-speed or dual-speed pumps.

This feature is measured in gallon per hour (GPH), the higher the GPH, the faster the pump is.

Type of filtration (Sand vs Cartridge Filter)

The filter type of your Intex pool pump is vital when selecting which pump to use on your pool. Sand filters are great for those who don’t like to do much maintenance on their pool pumps. Once you put new sand in your filter system, it might take 5 years before you need to replace it again.

The main drawbacks of choosing sand filters are they tend to be bulky and may not be that efficient in filtering debris compared to cartridge filters.

Cartridge filters can catch smaller particles better as small as 10 to 15 microns. However, since it catches more dirt and debris than sand filters, cartridge filters need to be replaced often. Depending on how frequently you use your swimming pool, you may have to replace the cartridge every two weeks.

Additional Considerations

  • Some pumps come with automatic 24-hour timers that you can set for 2,4,6,8, or 12 hours
  • If you use the Intex pool vacuum, then you may need a more powerful pump

Upgrading your Intex Pool Pump

The most common “upgrade” for Intex pools is switching from the small cartridge filter that came with your pool to a more powerful and feature laden sand filter pump. More details are below.

The Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter Pump and Saltwater System

When considering upgrading your intex pool pump, you may also consider changing your pool from a chlorine pool to a saltwater pool.

Intex offers their saltwater system as an add-on for an existing pump setup. You will need one of the sand filters though to run the saltwater system. Changing your pool to a saltwater system has a few really nice advantages:

  • No more chemicals to deal with
  • No faded swimsuits due to chlorine
  • Less irritating to eyes than chlorine
  • No hair discoloration from the chlorine

Benefits Of Upgrading Your Pool Pump

Having the right pool pump for your above ground pools can give you the following benefits:

  • Better circulation of your pool water
  • Improved filtration system for a cleaner and clearer swimming pool
  • Less time required to maintain your pool

When upgrading your pool pump, you should look at it as an investment since you’ll want to use this pool pump for a long time.

Tips For Your Intex Pool Pump Upgrade

Most of the products we mentioned can be used right away with your Intex pool pump’s hoses. So you just have to remove your old pool pump and put the brand new one in its place.

  • Your pool pump must be installed on a solid level and vibration-free base. It should be protected from the weather, rain, and freezing temperatures.
  • You should find a good location for your pump where there is adequate access, space, and lighting for routine maintenance.
  • Your pump motor requires a free circulation of air for cooling.
  • Never put pool chemicals directly into the filter pump. This may damage the pump and void the warranty.
  • Replace your filter cartridges when there’s already too much debris on it.
  • For pumps with sand filters, you should get the No.20 silica sand for a better and more efficient filtration system.

How Long Should You Run Your Pool Pump Each Day?

You might think that the hours per day your pump runs is a number everyone should know and is the same, unfortunately for Intex pool owners, it is not.  Standards for Above Ground pools are very new and each location is different.  The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) have developed standards American National Standard for Above ground/On ground Residential Swimming Pools which states the following

11.1.2 Turnover. The equipment shall be sized to provide turnover of the pool water at least once every 12 hours.  The system shall be designed to give the proper turnover rate based on the manufacturer’s specified maximum flow rate of the filter, in clean media condition of the filter.

Simply stated, your goal should be to have all of your pool water go through the pump and filter twice a day or once every 12 hours.  12 is a standard, a good starting point to calculate how many hours you need to run the pump.

How To Choose The Best Solar Pool Heater For Inground Pools

It’s well-known that you can significantly reduce your pool’s heating costs by simply using a solar pool heater instead of gas pool heaters or pool heat pumps. So how do you select the solar pool heating system best for your type of pool?

First, you have to consider the size of your inground swimming pool. The primary question pool owners ask us is “how many solar panels are needed to heat an inground pool?“. A good rule of thumb is to get solar panel kits that are at least half of your pool’s surface area.

If you have a 20′ x 30′ pool, that’s 600 square feet of surface area. For this pool size, you need at least 300 square feet of solar panels.

Of course, there’s no stopping you from getting more than the recommended square feet. The more solar panel surface you have the easier it is you can heat your pool water, especially if you’re dealing with large gallons of water or you prefer swimming in water with warmer temperatures.

The next thing you have to consider is where will you place your solar pool heating system. For your chosen heating system to work, you need to place it in a location that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.

The more time that your solar pool heater is exposed to harness the sun’s energy, the better. Some solar pool heaters can be easily installed on the ground and all you have to do is lay it there, others may have to be installed on your roof for better heat absorption.

Another you have to consider is the warranty of your solar pool heater. Manufacturers may offer warranties ranging from 2 to 10 years. This is vital in ensuring that you get the most out of your solar heating system.

Most panels are made from precompounded polypropylene that’s manufactured to withstand the harsh conditions on your roof and as well as the sun’s harmful UV rays.

FAQs About Solar Pool Heaters

How much do these solar pool heaters raise the temperature of water in a pool?

A properly-sized solar pool heater can add 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit to your pool water’s temperature for a better pool experience.

The more solar panels you are using the better the heat gain your pool can receive from your solar heating system.

What size solar pool heater do I need?

The size of the solar pool heater that you need heavily depends on the surface area of your swimming pool. It’s recommended that you get at least half of your pool’s surface area for your solar pool heater’s size.

For solar pool heater sizing, it’s always better to have more solar panels since it has low upfront costs than getting a gas pool heater or pool heat pump.

How to winterize the solar pool heater?

To winterize your solar pool heater, the water inside the collectors and piping system must be completely drained. You can either isolate each collector with a ball valve or you can switch the solar control to the “COLL” position if you have that option.

Once the winter season has passed, you can open the isolation valve in the collector feed line.

How long do solar pool heaters last?

Solar pool heaters are designed to last for several years, some may even last for more than 15 years. However, this may vary depending on the materials used to create the solar panels that you are using and where you place them.

Swimming Pool Chemicals List: Pool Chemistry 101

When it comes to keeping your pool water clean and clear, the swimming pool chemicals you will be using will play a big part. For first-time pool owners, figuring out the right chemicals to use can be an impossible task without a proper guide.

The good news is we have compiled a swimming pool chemicals list that will help you maintain your pool water in good condition as well as help you when pool problems such as cloudy water or green water arise.

To start, we have here a swimming pool chemicals list that you should always have in stock. Hey, you could even call this pool chemicals for dummies!

Most Important Pool Chemicals To Have

Table Of Contents

Pool owners should always have these pool chemicals on hand to keep their pool water balanced and safe to use.

Test Kit or Test Strips

Before you can start balancing your pool’s water chemistry, you have to know the current levels of the chemicals in your pool. Make sure that you know how to properly test your pool water, and always keep water testing supplies on hand.

Chlorine Tablets and Pool Shock

Chlorine is the most popular pool sanitizer to keep your water clean and free of bacteria, viruses, and algae. Chlorine levels in swimming pools should be kept between 1 to 3 ppm.

pH Increaser and Decreaser

Anything that enters your pool will have an effect on your water’s pH level. For this reason, you must have both a pH increaser and a pH decreaser if a need arises that you need to use either of the two.

Alkalinity Increaser and Decreaser

The alkalinity of your pool water is directly related to your pH levels and this pool chemical helps prevent your pH level from drastically moving up and down the scale.

Calcium Hardness Increaser

Clorox Pool&Spa 12204CLX Calcium Hardness Increaser, 4 lb, White
  • Increases low Total Hardness levels in swimming pool water
  • Prevents corrosion, etching, and staining
  • Prevents pool surface damage
  • Ideal for plaster pools and soft water areas

A low calcium hardness level often leads to scaling and corrosion of your pool surfaces, and the best way to prevent that from happening is by using a Calcium Hardness increaser.

Algaecides

Algae blooms are often the worst nightmares of pool ownership. Using algaecides in your pool will prevent algae from growing and keep your pool water clear.

Ultimate Swimming Pool Chemicals List

Sanitizers

Arguably the most important of all pool chemicals, sanitizers control bacteria and algae growth. They greatly reduce the risk of viruses and other microorganisms, as well as help to maintain water clarity.

Chlorine

  • Chlorine eliminates waterborne pathogens.
  • It is the most common pool sanitizer.

Chlorine is a halogen-based oxidizer that is commonly used on swimming pools to destroy and deactivate various dangerous bacteria and viruses in your pool water. Chlorine comes in liquid, tablet, and granular form. Liquid and granular chlorine are best for pool shocking while tablets are best used in maintaining the chlorine supply in your pool.

Bromine

  • Bromine is an alternative to chlorine that’s easier on the skin and has less odor.
  • It is more effective in killing algae than chlorine.

Bromine makes compounds called bromamines that works to disinfect your pool water. Pool owners with very sensitive skin may prefer to use bromine since it does not cause as much skin and eye irritation as chlorine. Bromine comes in tablet or granular form.

Note: Bromine is more expensive than chlorine and works best in indoor pools and spas.

Polyhexamethylene Biguanide or Biguanide

Baquacil Sanitizer
  • Swimming Pool Sanitizer and Algistat
  • Chlorine-Free
  • Biguanide is an effective microbe killer and helps prevent bacteria growth.
  • It also does not break down in high temperatures, unlike chlorine.

Biguanide is an alternative to chlorine and bromine products and is considered to be a very swimmer-friendly sanitizer. However, it will not work with any other kinds of sanitizing chemical.

If you plan to use biguanide to sanitize your swimming pool, you also have to use hydrogen peroxide to kill other contaminants that this pool chemical cannot break down like body oils, sweat, and any other chemicals that your body releases when you’re using your pool.

Warning: Pools using biguanide are prone to cloudy water or foaming.

Ionizer

Main Access 444301 Power Ionizer Hybrid Complete Swimming Pool Care Sanitation System That Treats Up to 40,000 Gallons of Water
  • FOR 40,000 GALLONS OF WATER: Utilizes natural minerals for swimming pool care of up to 40,000 gallons of water
  • SPEND LESS TIME AND MONEY: Allows you to spend less time and less money
  • USES COPPER AND SILVER: Proven technology utilizes copper and silver to sanitize pool
  • REDUCES ITCY SKIN: Reduces itchy skin, eye irritation, faded suits, and chemical odors
  • Pool ionization keeps your water clean without using any harsh chemicals.
  • This is the best pool sanitizer for people with very sensitive skin.

A swimming pool ionizer sanitizes pool water by releasing positively charged silver and copper ions into the water to get rid of viruses and bacteria. Ionization eliminates the need to use high levels of chlorine or bromine in your pool. However, to achieve the best pool sanitization, you still have to supplement your ionizer with chlorine on a weekly basis.

Warning: Ionization can cause brown or black stains to appear on your pool surfaces if there’s constant high copper levels.

Pool Shocks/Oxidizers

Similar to sanitizers, pool shocks aid in controlling the bacteria and algae growth in your swimming pool. A shock’s main purpose is to destroy organic compounds present in your pool and the sanitizer bi-products in it like chloramines and bromamines.

Pool owners are advised to shock their pool once a week or once every two weeks depending on how often you use your pool.

Tip: Pool shocks quickly disappear from your pool because of the sun’s UV rays, so the best time to shock your pool will be during night or dusk. You should leave your pool pump running to distribute the shock properly around your pool.

Sodium Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione or Sodium Di-Chlor

In The Swim Sodium Di-Chlor Chlorine Granular - 5 Pound Bucket
  • Powerful quick-dissolving chlorine shock treatment that is great for regular maintenance
  • Main active ingredient is 99% Sodium Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione Dihydrate (Sodium Di-Chlor) with a minimum of 56% available chlorine
  • Does not contain calcium and is pH balanced
  • Dosage: 1 Pound per 10,000 gallons
  • Sodium Di-Chlor is a strong pool shock treatment that contains 55-62% active chlorine.

When dichlor reacts with pool water, it quickly turns into hydrochloric acid and hypochlorite ions and proceeds in eliminating any microscopic compounds in your pool.

This quick-dissolving pool shock contains cyanuric acid and comes in granular or tablet form. It has a pH level of around 7 (neutral) so it does not have much effect on the current pH level of your swimming pool.

Calcium-Hypochlorite or Cal-Hypo

In The Swim Calcium Hypochlorite Chlorine Granular Pool Shock - 50 Pounds
  • NOTE: You must be present to sign for delivery of this item.
  • NOTE: This item cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii (item will be removed from your order).
  • 65% Available Chlorine (35% Calcium).
  • Non-stabilized formula is ideal for super shocking or everyday use.
  • A better alternative to Sodium Di-Chlor, Cal-Hypo is the most common form of granular pool shock and is the least expensive.

Shocking your pool with calcium hypochlorite will help ensure your pool is well-defended against bacteria, algae, and other water contaminants.

When calcium hypochlorite is added to your pool, it goes against microbes and other organic contaminants. Its chlorine compounds will start to destroy the functions of cells by bonding with enzymes and other cell components. By disabling their internal workings or rupturing the cell walls, it will shut the cell down, thus sanitizing your pool water.

Warning: Don’t use Cal-Hypo on pools with a pH of over 7.8 or high alkalinity or calcium levels. For every 1 ppm of free chlorine added, Cal Hypo also adds 0.7-0.8 ppm of calcium to your swimming pool.

Sodium Hypochlorite

Liquid Chlorine Pool Shock (Case - 4 Gallons) - 12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite
  • ✅ Premium Swimming Pool Shock - NSF/ANSI 60 Certified
  • ✅ Product Does Not Cloud Pool
  • ✅ Ready To Use, No Mixing Required - Great Choice for Pool Closings
  • ✅ Perfect For Pressure Washing, Sanitation & Other Related Uses
  • Sodium Hypochlorite is commonly referred to as liquid chlorine and is widely used in both residential and commercial pools.

The popularity of sodium hypochlorite is primarily due to the product’s availability, efficacy, and cost. Unlike Cal-Hypo, Sodium Hypochlorite is quick-dissolving and does not need to be pre-dissolved before using it in your swimming pool.

Liquid chlorine has a high pH level of 13 and is a preferred shock treatment to quickly remove algae.

Non-Chlorine Oxidizer or Monopersulfate

2-Pack Oxy-Spa Non-chlorine Hot Tub & Pool MPS Oxidizing Shock 2 x 1.5 lb (3 Lbs. Total)
  • (2) 1-1/2 lb. Bottles (3 lbs. total)
  • Granular Monopersulfate Oxidizing Shock
  • Unsurpassed quality - Equals or outperforms all other brands
  • Maximum effectiveness in pools and hot tubs
  • Non-Chlorine Oxidizer will effectively remove oils from your pool and improve water clarity.

Non-chlorine oxidizer or Monopersulfate or MPS uses the power of active oxygen to eliminate contaminants in your pool water and allows chlorine to stay effective longer. It also does a good job of preventing chloramines from building up so you don’t need to super chlorinate often.

It will remove all organic material from your pool water and eliminate waste without the unpleasant side effects of chlorine shock. it is commonly used by mineral-based pool systems.

Lithium Hypochlorite or Litho Shock

  • Lithium Hypochlorite dissolves quickly and leaves very little residue.

Litho shock is a favorite of vinyl pool owners since it’s a great oxidizer with a low available chlorine percentage. It does not contain any calcium or cyanuric acid, unlike other pool shocks.

Unfortunately, due to limited lithium supplies, the production of Lithium Hypochlorite has been discontinued by most pool chemical manufacturers.

Water Balancers

Balanced pool water is clean, healthy, and safe to swim in. It also prevents damage to the structure of your pool and your pool equipment.

As a pool owner, you must accept the fact that your pool water is constantly changing all year round. Everything that comes into your swimming pool will affect your pool water balance and it’s your job to maintain the right balance.

pH Increaser

Clorox Pool&Spa 12104CLX pH Up, 4 lb, 4lb
  • Raises low pH in swimming pool water
  • Reduces eye irritation for swimmers
  • Guards against corrosion
  • For best results, use with the Clorox Pool App
  • Easily increase the pH level in your swimming pool.

pH is a measure of your pool’s acidity. Pool water with a pH level below 7 is considered acidic and may not be safe to swim on. The main causes of low pH in pools include heavy rains and having lots of organic waste/debris in your pool.

The best way to increase the pH level in swimming pools to 7.2 to 7.6 pH is by making use of pH increasers. Restoring your pH level to neutral will prevent corrosion and protect you from experiencing dry itchy skin and eye irritation.

pH Decreaser

Clorox Pool&Spa 12105CLX pH Down, 5 lb
  • Lowers high pH in swimming pool water
  • Restores neutral pH
  • Protects from scale
  • Easier, safter than Muriatic acid - easy pour, no splash application
  • Easily decrease the pH level in your swimming pool.

A high pH level in your pool water makes waste chlorine and makes them inactive. The most common causes of high pH levels are aeration from water features and low total alkalinity levels.

If your pool’s pH level is more than 7.6, you must add an acid to bring it down to 7.2 to 7.6 and prevent scale formation on your pool surfaces. The common acids used to decrease pH are muriatic acid and sodium bisulfate or dry acid which is the active ingredient in most pH decreasers.

Alkalinity Increaser

Clorox Pool&Spa 12016CLX Pool Total Alkalinity Increaser, 16-Pound, White
  • Keeps pool pH balanced
  • Protects against eye and skin irritation
  • Reduces pool maintenance
  • Increases total alkalinity in pool water
  • Helps increase the total alkalinity in your pool.

The level of alkalinity is a measurement of all carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substances present in your pool water. Total alkalinity is connected to the pH level of your swimming pool. Low alkaline water cause low pH level while high alkaline water leads to high pH level.

If your pool has low alkalinity, you need to use an Alkalinity Increaser to bring the total alkalinity level closer to 100 ppm.

Alkalinity Decreaser

Acid Blue Muriatic Acid - Swimming Pool pH Reducer Balancer | Buffered, Low-Fume - 1 Gallon
  • ✅ Vapor Reduction Technology reduces up to 90% of harmful vapors normally associated with 'old school' muriatic acid
  • ✅ Controls the pH level of water in pools - super effective pool water balancer
  • ✅ Brightens concrete & masonry surfaces
  • ✅ Removes stains from driveways or garage floors
  • Helps decrease the total alkalinity in your pool.

Commonly known as the buffering capacity of water, alkalinity helps prevent pH from drifting. A high alkalinity in your pool will often lead to algae bloom and calcium buildup.

If your pool has high alkalinity, you need to use an Alkalinity Decreaser to bring the total alkalinity to the recommended levels which is 80 to 120 ppm. Similar to decreasing the pH level, the most common pool chemicals used to decrease alkalinity contains muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate.

Calcium Hardness Increaser or Calcium Chloride

Clorox Pool&Spa 12204CLX Calcium Hardness Increaser, 4 lb, White
  • Increases low Total Hardness levels in swimming pool water
  • Prevents corrosion, etching, and staining
  • Prevents pool surface damage
  • Ideal for plaster pools and soft water areas

How hard or soft your pool water in terms of its Calcium Hardness level is important in keeping your pool balanced. The recommended range is anywhere between 180 to 220 ppm.

Soft pool water often leads to corrosion of your pool structure and the best way to avoid this is by using Calcium Hardness increasers.

Note: For those who need to soften “hard” pool water, you can simply add new water to your pool to lower the calcium hardness content. You don’t need to rely on pool chemicals to do so.

Algaecides

This is highly recommended for outdoor pool owners as an added protection against algae. This pool chemical helps disrupt algae’s regular cellular processes and prevent it from taking over your whole swimming pool.

Quaternary Ammonia or Quat Algaecides

  • Most common and least expensive pool algaecide available today.

The ammonium compounds in quat algaecides act as surfactants in the water. This lowers the water’s surface tension, which splits open the algae cell walls and kills them in the process. This pool algaecide contains ammonium chloride salts at 5 to 10 percent concentrations.

Quat algaecides are in liquid form and may cause foam if your pool gets overdosed with it.

Note: Quat algaecides are used for prevention and are not to be used to kill existing algae in your pool.

Polyquats

  • Polyquats are better at preventing and removing algae from your swimming pool than Quat algaecides.

Unlike Quaternary Ammonia, Polyquats are can handle and kill many types of algae such as those green, mustard, and black algae. Polyquats contain ammonium chloride salts at 30 to 60 percent concentrations and they don’t foam when used in your pool.

Mineral

  • Mineral-based pool algaecides helps prevent and destroy algae in your pool.

Currently, there are two types of mineral-based pool algaecides, those containing copper sulfates or colloidal silver. They work by creating residuals on your pool’s interior surface where algae is usually found. These pool algaecides are often by pool owners experiencing persistent algae growth.

Borates

  • Borate does not only stabilize the pH in your pool but it also inhibits the growth of algae.

Borate prevents algae from undergoing photosynthesis and starve them by stopping their metabolism. Borate is also a good way to control corrosion in your pool by acting as non-oxidizing anodic inhibitors.

Sodium Bromide or Bromine Salts

  • Bromine salts are not technically algaecide but when used with granular chlorine, they help kill algae in your pool effectively.

Bromine salts are considered shock enhancer since it helps create hypobromous acid which has algae-killing properties. Bromine salts are effective in destroying mustard and black algae.

Gunite vs Fiberglass Pools: Which Inground Pool Is The Best?

What Pool Type Is Best For You and Your Family – Gunite vs Fiberglass Pools?

When it comes to planning for your new pool, you have several options to choose from, and one of the difficult choices you have to make is selecting the primary material you should use for your swimming pool. Now, if you’re still picking between fiberglass pools and concrete (or gunite) pools, then we’re here to help you decide once and for all.

Gunite which is also known as shotcrete, cast, tile, or plaster can be categorized under concrete pools. These pools can be custom-built to meet your design preferences. This makes concrete pools one of the most popular types of swimming pools built today.

Whether you’d want an Olympic-size infinity pool, a pool shaped like your favorite number, or a 12-foot deep pool, you can build it using gunite or concrete.

For fiberglass pools, the design options may a bit limited compared to gunite pools. However, this does not stop it from becoming a popular choice for people who want to install a long-term pool in their backyard.

The main selling point of fiberglass pools is they are very easy to install compared to other in-ground pool types. They are faster to build and you may even install them yourself without the need to hire a pool professional.

But overall, how do gunite pools compare to fiberglass pools?

Let’s compare these two pools, and find out which is the better swimming pool for you and your family.

Initial Cost of Concrete Pools

Pool construction for concrete/gunite pools usually costs between $40,000 to $100,000, depending on several factors like your pool’s size and shape. You also have to consider if you need any additional pool features like heaters, slides, and lights, and these will certainly increase the initial cost needed to build your inground pool.

The time you have to wait before you can use your new pool may range from several weeks to a few months. The faster you want your pool to be constructed, the more money you have to spend to build it.

Initial Cost of Fiberglass Pools

Unlike concrete swimming pools, you have the option to DIY installing a fiberglass pool but only do it if you’re confident enough that you can do a good job. For those installing their fiberglass pool themselves, the initial cost may be between $12,000 and $30,000.

However, if you’ll let pool builders do it for you, you will spend about $45,000 to $80,000 depending on your pool’s size, shape, and added features.

Fiberglass pools are easier to install so you don’t have to wait that long for you to see and use your new pool.

Tip: If you haven’t install fiberglass swimming pools before, it’ll be better if you’ll let trained and experienced pool contractors do it for you.

More Affordable: Fiberglass

Maintenance Costs for Concrete Pools

Concrete pools need resurfacing every 10 to 20 years and this will cost you anywhere around $5,000 to $10,000. Those living in regions with colder climates may have to avail of pool resurfacing more often than those living in warmer regions.

Concrete pools are also prone to algae growth than any other pool type. For this reason, you have to regularly clean and maintain your pool’s interior and closely monitor your pool water’s pH balance.

Maintenance Costs for Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are easier to maintain than gunite pools since they never require resurfacing and the gel coat of your pool is algae-resistant.

Owners of fiberglass pools are still advised to monitor their water chemistry from time to time, but they won’t have to do much cleaning to keep their pool clean. This means less time spent on pool maintenance and less money spent on pool chemicals.

Less Maintenance Costs: Fiberglass

Customization of Concrete Pools

For people who’d like their pool to be as unique as possible, concrete pools offer almost limitless design options. You have more freedom to design your pool based on your preference when you use gunite than any other pool material.

Customization of Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are created from pre-designed molds, and pools made of this material have a maximum length of 40 feet, a maximum width of 16 feet, and a maximum depth of 8.5 feet.

Your choice for your pool size and shape will be limited but you can still customize your pool by adding tanning ledges, lights, and other pool finishes you can think of.

More Customizable: Concrete

Durability of Concrete Pools

Concrete swimming pools are famous for their durability, some pool owners report that they’ve had their concrete pool for generations already. The structure of the gunite pool is made of concrete as well as all the interior finishes so you don’t have to worry about it being damaged by your pets, toys, or tree branches.

The only thing you have to do to ensure your concrete pool stays in good condition is to have it resurfaced or plastered once every 10 to 20 years.

Durability of Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass is new to the pool industry so we don’t have much data yet about its durability. Pools made of fiberglass are practically unaffected by normal wear and tear.

However, pool owners are reporting that their fiberglass pools popped out of the ground. The good news is most fiberglass pool manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty to their pool shells, but that may not be able to cover everything.

Tip: Do not drain all the water in your fiberglass pool to avoid damaging it.

Most Durable: Concrete

Feel of Concrete Pools

Much like any other concrete structures, pools made of concrete or gunite, especially those with plaster finish, can be rough on your skin.

If you’d like a smooth surface to swim on, you can choose a tile finish for your concrete pool, but be reminded that tile finish is the most expensive concrete pool finish out there.

Feel of Fiberglass Pools

The interior of fiberglass swimming pools are smooth because of its gel coat. Steps of fiberglass pools can be made to be anti-slip but those aren’t rough either.

For people who like would like a smooth pool surface, fiberglass pools are the best option and you don’t have to spend extra just to make it like that.

Better Feel: Fiberglass

Best Tankless Pool Heaters – Reviews and What You Need To Know

When it comes to the ultimate relaxation, there’s nothing like jumping into a comfortably warm pool after a long day. And as a pool owner, we believe that one of the best ways to achieve this ideal setting is with the help of tankless pool heaters.

What is a Tankless Water Heater?

Tankless water heaters are currently in-demand for homes looking to become more energy-efficient. Unlike traditional water heaters that need to continuously heat and reheat water, tankless water heaters produce warm water using powerful gas burners or electric coils so it does it faster.

It does use more power, however, without the need to reheat the water, tankless water heaters becomes the more energy-efficient option and is the main reason why it became popular to various households.

Now, the question you might be asking now is if you can use standard tankless water heaters on your swimming pool to keep your pool water warm.

Can I Use Standard Tankless Water Heater On My Swimming Pool?

Well, you can do so, but that might not be the best way to heat your pool since domestic tankless water heaters were not designed for that purpose.

This setup will require you to run two different pool pumps at the same time since the typical pool pump may overwhelm your tankless water heater and it may not be able to properly heat the water that will pass through it.

If you plan to use a separate domestic tankless water heater, you have to get a pool pump that has a low flow rate that will be just right for your heater.

Tankless water heaters sold for residential use were designed to produce a relatively large water temperature gain at a relatively low flow rate. A swimming pool requires a relatively small water temperature gain on a relatively large flow rate.

Since getting a tankless water heater is a good indication that you plan to save money on energy costs, the best alternative we could think of is by buying a tankless water heater designed for pool heating.

A reliable tankless electric pool heater can be the best solution to keep your swimming pool comfortable and energy-efficient for years.

How Do Tankless Water Heater For Pools Works?

Tankless water heater for pools works the same as a residential hot water tankless heater would — they operate based on demand.

On-demand pool heating works when cold water from your pool enters and the sensors inside the heater ignites the burners or its heating elements. Once the water temperature reaches your desired temperature, the warm water will exit the heater and go back to your swimming pool.

The tankless pool heater should be installed on your existing pool circulation system so that the heater will be right after the water passes through your pool filter. This way you’ll have debris-free water entering your electric pool heater.

Benefits Of Using Tankless Pool Water Heaters

Easy Installation

Maybe you’re already aware of how difficult it can be to install a gas-powered pool heater or solar-powered pool heater, whether you’ve heard a fellow pool owner complaining about it or you’ve experienced it yourself. This is one of the main reasons why tankless pool heaters are a popular choice for those who want to install a usable pool heater fast and easy.

You can skip the hassle of installing and using a propane or natural gas source just to heat your swimming pool. Another great thing about tankless pool heaters is their space-saving design, this makes them a good option for various pool sizes from small to large ones.

High-Efficiency Rate

A report from the DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York found that the average swimming pool heater (pool heat pumps and gas pool heaters) has an efficiency rate between 80 and 85 percent. If you’re not familiar with how that reflects in real life, let’s say you put $100 of fuel into the heater, your device then creates $80 to $85 of heat, and the rest of it is lost or wasted.

On the other hand, tankless pool water heaters can reach up to 99.8 percent efficiency, regardless of the type of pool it is used on or your surrounding’s ambient temperature, both can affect the efficiency of pool heat pumps, solar pool heaters, and gas-powered pool heaters.

Low Maintenance

Unlike traditional gas-powered pool heaters, tankless water heaters don’t require much maintenance. For pool owners residing in places with hard water, a vinegar flush every 500 hours can help prevent mineral buildup or scaling to occur. This 15-minute task can be done by either a professional or you, the pool owner.

Reliability

When it comes to reliability, the best pool heater you can get is an electric water heater. While gas heaters may not work properly at extreme temperatures and pool heaters using solar panels heavily rely on the sun, electric tankless pool heaters can still run even if those factors are present or not.

You can use these electric pool heaters any time of the year to heat your swimming pool.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Heaters

How long do tankless water heaters last?

Gas-powered tankless heaters typically last for 20 years or more, this is two or three times longer than traditional tank-type heaters. Meanwhile, electric tankless heaters can work for 7 to 10 years.

What’s the best pool heater on the market?

Depending on your needs and preferences, you can either go with an electric tankless pool heater for less energy cost or choose a gas-powered pool heater to heat your pool water fast.

You can check out our post about the best pool heaters today to help you decide.

How often should I run my pool heater?

If your swimming pool is not going to be used for several days or weeks, it is recommended that you let it cool down and only run your heater the day before you want to use it again.

It usually takes about 24 hours to raise a pool to your ideal temperature, but this estimate varies depending on your location and your pool’s starting temperature.

A pool with a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher can already be considered warm and comfortable to use.

If you are trying to lessen your energy costs, you can run your heater only when the temperature in your swimming pool dips below 78 ℉.

Best Robotic Pool Cleaner For Vinyl Liner

If you own an above ground pool you bought from Amazon or a custom-built vinyl inground pool, you might be wondering, “what’s the best robotic pool cleaner for vinyl liner?“.

Don’t worry, you’re not the first person to ask that question. In fact, vinyl is the most common pool liner material used today.

Considering that, it should be easy to find the best pool cleaner for my vinyl pool, right?

Well, not quite but it can be since you have to consider that not all robotic pool cleaners are made to work for all pool surfaces. Vinyl liners can be prone to damage if you’ll be using a pool cleaner that’s made for concrete pools since there’s a good chance that those have rough or pointy edges on them.

You can even say that pools using vinyl liners can be delicate compared to other swimming pools, and choosing the right pool cleaner to use can have a great impact on your pool’s lifespan.

Robotic Pool Cleaner For Vinyl Pools Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing a pool cleaner for your vinyl liner, we recommend that you consider the following features so you can get the best robotic cleaner for your swimming pool.

Pool Type Compatibility

The first and most important feature you have to look into a robotic pool cleaner is if it’s made for vinyl liners. You can’t just use a robotic cleaner made for concrete surfaces unless the manufacturer clearly states that it can be used on vinyl pools.

Suction Power

The cleanliness of your swimming highly depends on your robotic pool cleaner’s suction power. You must pay attention to this feature and look for anything above 60 gallons per minute or 3,600 gallons per hour since that’s considered good.

As the number goes up, the more powerful and the better a cleaner gets. A lower GPH means you’re getting a less powerful machine that may not be capable of properly cleaning your vinyl pool.

Ease of Use

Robotic cleaners should not be that hard to set up and use. One of the main reasons why you’re getting this type of pool cleaner is you don’t have the time to clean your pool on your own. If you are going to spend much of your time setting up your pool cleaner, then you might be better off finding a better replacement for it.

You also have to consider the design of your robotic vacuum. Some pool cleaner models are bulky and heavy, similar to the usual household vacuums. You’ll be better off finding a lighter pool cleaner so you won’t have any trouble putting it in your pool and pulling the same machine out of your pool once it’s done cleaning it.

Now, we did our research and looked over dozens of available robotic pool cleaners today, and we’re able to come up with the best robotic pool cleaner for vinyl liners, and we’re recommending both versions of the Dolphin Nautilus CC robotic pool cleaner.
